LastRound vs Generic Reusable Cotton Rounds: What's the Difference?

Not All Reusable Cotton Rounds Are Equal

The reusable cotton round category has grown significantly since 2018. What started as a niche sustainable product is now available from discount retailers, fast-fashion brands, and dedicated sustainable brands alike. The price range runs from under £5 for a large pack of generic rounds to £18–£25 for premium options. The difference between them is not always obvious from a product listing — but it becomes apparent after 50 washes.

The Generic Category: Pros and Cons

Generic reusable cotton rounds — often sold in packs of 10–20 for under £8 — have democratised the category. They are widely available, accessible on price, and most work adequately for their first few weeks of use.

What works well: Initial softness and absorbency are often comparable to premium options. The lower upfront cost removes the barrier to trying reusables for the first time.

Where they fall short:

  • Edge fraying: Many generic rounds use simple serged edges that begin to fray after 30–50 wash cycles. The fraying creates loose threads that can snag on skin and release fibres.
  • Shape retention: Thinner generics lose their circular shape after repeated washing, becoming oval or irregular.
  • No storage solution: Most generic packs come in a small mesh bag for washing, but no storage for daily use. Used rounds are often left on countertops or in cups — damp, in contact with surfaces, and not hygienically stored.
  • Reduced absorbency: After repeated washing, the fibre structure of cheaper rounds can compress, reducing absorbency. This is especially noticeable with watery toners and essences.

LastRound: Design Differences

LastRound was designed with specific failure modes in mind — the problems that had caused earlier reusable rounds to disappoint early adopters.

  • Edge construction: Finished edges designed to resist fraying through 200+ wash cycles.
  • Weave structure: A specific fabric weave chosen for shape retention — rounds maintain their circular form after repeated machine washing at standard temperatures.
  • Self-cleaning stand: The silicone holder keeps clean and used rounds separate, allows rounds to dry between uses (reducing bacteria), and displays prominently on a bathroom shelf — making the habit easy to maintain.
  • Wash cycle durability: Tested to approximately 200 machine wash cycles at 40°C without significant degradation.

Side-by-Side Comparison

Rounds per set 10–16 7
Edge durability Fraying after ~50 washes Maintained through 200+ washes
Shape retention Often degrades Consistent circular shape retained
Storage solution Mesh laundry bag only Self-cleaning silicone stand
Hygienic drying No — typically left flat/damp Yes — stand allows airflow
Cost per use (lifetime) Higher (replace more often) Lower (longer usable life)

Which Is Right for You?

If you are testing reusables for the first time and want a low-commitment entry point, a budget set is a reasonable starting point. But if you are making a long-term commitment to reducing bathroom waste — and want a product that will still be performing well in three years — the investment in a premium option pays off both financially and in daily experience.
