TL;DR — Scored on five named criteria, LastSwab Beauty takes four and LastRound takes one — and the one it takes, coverage per pass, is the criterion that full-face removal is actually made of. So the verdict is both, bought separately: the round clears the face, the swab corrects the line. Figure 1 — Five criteria, two tools
One 7 cm LastRound gives you roughly 38 cm² of working surface per side; LastSwab Beauty's tip works in millimeters. That single ratio decides the one criterion the job of clearing a full face is actually made of — and it is also why LastRound goes on to lose the other four criteria below to a swab that cannot do that job at all.
This is LastObject comparing LastObject products, which means the criteria have to be on the table before the verdict is. One thing to say plainly first: this piece scores the two tools on five properties, and the swab takes four of five. The tallies differ because the questions differ — a property scorecard rewards the tool that is better built, a job list rewards the tool that is better matched. Read this one if your question is full-face removal; read that one if your question is which tool for which task.
The five criteria, named before the verdict
- Coverage per pass — how much face you clear before the tool is loaded and you have to reach for a fresh surface.
- Product economy — how much of the remover you pour actually reaches your skin, and how much the tool keeps.
- Lint — stray fiber left on the face, and specifically near the eye.
- Maintenance per use — what it costs you to make the tool ready again, and what the evidence says about whether that cleaning works.
- Precision at the lash line — control at the scale of a single flake of mascara.
A sixth section audits what third-party fiber testing does and does not support for our own material. It is not scored, because it measures the quality of our evidence rather than the two tools against each other.
1. Coverage per pass — LastRound, decisively
A 7 cm round is the same diameter as a disposable cotton pad, which puts about 38 cm² under your hand per side and about 77 cm² per round before it needs the wash bag. LastObject sells LastRound as a set of seven rounds at $16.00 at its US store — so a full-face removal that takes two or three pads has the whole evening covered with rounds to spare.
LastSwab Beauty cannot compete here and was never built to. By our own estimate the tip presents something on the order of a hundred times less contact area, because it works in millimeters where the round works in centimeters. Clearing a jaw of foundation with it is a category error.
The other in-range format people reach for is a cloth. A cloth beats a round on raw surface area, but it has no per-use unit: you commit the entire piece to one session, and the same square inch that took off foundation comes back around toward the eye. Seven separately retirable rounds with a clean edge to work to is a different, more controllable geometry. Round wins.
2. Product economy — LastSwab Beauty wins this one
This is the first criterion the round loses, and it loses it on physics rather than opinion. LastRound is a textile: LastObject describes it as a 30% cotton / 70% lyocell (wood fibre) blend. Regenerated cellulose fibers are documented in the peer-reviewed literature at moisture regain around 10–13% against cotton's 7–8% — meaning the fiber itself takes water and product into its structure, not just onto its face.
For a makeup pad that is partly a virtue: a saturated round holds a reservoir you can press back out across a cheek. But it is unambiguously a cost. Some of every pump of micellar water or oil you use ends up inside the fiber and goes down the drain at the next wash.
LastSwab Beauty has no such loss. LastObject describes the tip as TPE — a non-porous material — so every drop you put on it stays on the surface and transfers to skin. If your criterion is "remover delivered per remover poured," the swab wins and the round does not come close. Swab wins.
3. Lint — LastSwab Beauty, and the round only beats loose cotton
A non-porous TPE tip has no fibers to shed, so it sheds none — and zero beats low, however low. Swab wins outright.
What the round can honestly claim is a narrower win, over loose cotton. Fiber shedding from textiles is real and it rises with laundering. Controlled testing published in Polymers found that cotton fabric released significantly more particles than a cotton-polyester blend in every size category measured, and that release climbed with wash count rather than settling — roughly a doubling between wash three and wash fifty in the smallest size band.
That study tested cotton and cotton-polyester. It did not test lyocell, and we could find no published third-party measurement of shedding from LastObject's specific 30/70 blend. So the fair statement is: the fiber-science direction of travel favors a blended, high-tenacity regenerated-cellulose fabric over loose cotton fiber, we have no independent number for our own material, and against the swab the round loses this criterion regardless of what that number turns out to be.
4. Maintenance per use — LastSwab Beauty again
The swab's routine is a rinse. LastObject's care instructions for LastSwab are to rinse it under warm water, with a little soap if you want, dry it and put it back in its case. There is no cycle to run and no batch to accumulate.
The round's routine is a wash. LastObject rates each round for approximately 250 wash cycles and specifies machine washing at up to 60°C in the mesh bag that ships with the set; the refill set is $9.00 at LastObject's US store. The only published care prohibition on the product page is fabric softener — LastObject's stated reason is that it coats the fibres and reduces absorption. Swab wins: rinse-and-go beats a laundry cycle, and pretending otherwise would be silly.
Whether the wash actually does the hygienic job is a separate question with a conditional answer — a 2025 peer-reviewed laundering test cleared every home-wash condition except one, and our machine-washing guide walks through that study, the one failing combination, and what it means for sensitive-skin households. The disposable round, for its part, has no maintenance debt at all; that is its single genuine advantage and it is not a small one.
5. Precision at the lash line — LastSwab Beauty
Correcting a wing, cleaning under a lash line, lifting one flake of mascara: this is a millimeter job, and a 7 cm disc has no edge fine enough to do it without taking the rest of the eye with it. The same tip geometry that makes the swab useless at criterion 1 makes it the only sensible tool here. Swab wins. What third-party fiber data supports (not scored)
Lyocell is the reason the round survives 250 washes rather than pilling apart. Published fiber data puts lyocell tenacity at roughly 30–45 cN/tex against cotton's 19.5–35, and lyocell retains a large share of that strength wet — which is the state a makeup pad spends its entire working life in.
On end of life, LastObject states that spent rounds are home compostable. We will not upgrade that to a certification claim: the product page names no standard behind it and no testing body, and until it does, it is a brand statement and nothing more. What independent work does show is different and narrower. In real seawater, regenerated cellulose fibers disintegrated in roughly 24–26 days and natural cellulose in about 34–40 days, while oil-based fibers showed no sign of disintegration across 428 days; the same paper measured biodegradation separately, in laboratory bioreactors. That is a marine result about cellulose as a fiber class. It is not a home-compost result, and the two are not interchangeable.

The honest recommendation
One to four, against our own comparison, in favor of the cheaper product. We are leaving it there, because the tally is not the verdict — the job is. Four of those five criteria are won by a tool that physically cannot clear a cheek of foundation. The one the round wins is the one that removing a face of makeup is made of. Buy both, because they do not overlap: the round clears the face, the swab corrects the line. And if that 1–4 tally sits oddly next to the "five jobs, three winners" verdict in the companion piece, that is the criteria-versus-jobs difference from the introduction, not a change of mind.

The break-even against disposables is easier to defend. Store-brand disposable cotton rounds — Equate Beauty Cotton Rounds, 100 count, $2.14 at Walmart in the US — work out at 2.1 cents each, which puts the $16.00 set's break-even at roughly 760 disposable rounds. At two rounds a night that is about twelve and a half months, and the $9.00 refill shortens every cycle after that. LastObject's own headline figure is larger — the brand states one set replaces approximately 1,750 single-use rounds — but that rests on the brand's own arithmetic of seven pads times 250 washes, so treat the roughly-a-year figure as the conservative one.
When LastRound is the wrong choice
- Nail polish and acetone. LastObject's published care instructions cover machine washing and name only fabric softener as something to avoid; they do not address acetone at all. With no guidance from the brand and permanent pigment staining as the obvious risk, use something disposable.
- Travel with no wash access. Seven damp rounds in a bag with no machine at the other end is worse than a small sleeve of disposables. The maintenance debt is the product's real cost.
- A cold-wash, line-drying household. See criterion 4 — that is the one laundering combination the evidence does not clear, and the machine-washing guide explains why. If nothing about the routine is going to change, the hygiene argument does not hold up and you should not pretend it does.
- Actively broken, infected or inflamed skin. The American Academy of Dermatology's published guidance describes applying cleanser with the fingertips, cautions against scrubbing, and cautions against pulling hard on the delicate skin around the eyes. That guidance is about tools in general, ours included. A skin condition that is not settling is a question for a clinician, not for a product page.
When LastSwab Beauty is the wrong choice
- Any full-face removal. This is the whole point of criterion 1. A millimeter tip against a jawline is the wrong tool, and no amount of patience fixes the geometry.
- Anywhere you want a reservoir. The non-porous tip that wins criterion 2 holds nothing in reserve: it delivers what is on it and then it is dry. For sweeping remover across a cheek you want a fiber that soaks and releases, which is exactly what the round is.
- Short-term use. LastObject's ISO 14040/14044 life-cycle assessment puts the environmental break-even against single-use swabs at 35 uses. Bought and abandoned before that, it is the worse option by the brand's own measurement.
- Inside the ear canal. LastObject states the swab is not intended for cleaning inside the ear canal.
