TL;DR — Color is the one attribute of a used round that carries no hygiene information. Reprocessing research tracks discoloration and cleanliness as separate findings, and the contaminated tools in the consumer research are overwhelmingly the ones that never get washed. So judge a round by texture, smell and structure — a stiff or waxy patch, a sour note on a dry round, fraying — and retire it on mechanical failure, not shade. A stain on a reusable makeup round is a pigment record, not a bacteria count — and the two are established by completely different tests. The cleanest published statement of that principle comes from a 2025 study that put reusable medical instruments through up to 100 full reprocessing cycles, logged wear that was "predominantly related to discoloration" while judging fitness for service separately — by visual cleanliness and structural integrity — and concluded that no fixed retirement number could be set; we take that study apart, provenance and all, in our guide to reusable swab wear signs. Color and cleanliness were tracked as separate findings. That distinction is the whole answer to the question, and it holds for a textile round in a bathroom too.

What the stain is actually made of
The gray-brown shadow that settles into a round after a few weeks is mostly what your face was wearing: iron-oxide pigments from foundation, carbon black from liner and mascara, some sunscreen filters, and oxidized sebum. Pigments are designed to be color-fast. Sebum is more stubborn than most people expect, because its bulk is triglyceride, and triglyceride is not shifted by alkaline detergent alone — it needs a lipase enzyme. In one optimized laboratory setup from 2013, a bacterial lipase achieved maximum oil removal of 62% from soiled cotton fabric at 40°C. That was a controlled experiment on olive oil, not makeup in a washing machine, and the remaining fraction is the point: some oil-bound color stays behind even when the wash has done its job. What stays is chemistry. It is not a population.
What a used round is actually carrying
Two named research groups have addressed the relevant question directly — one by reviewing the published literature, one by culturing the products themselves.
Microbiologists Lucy Owen and Katie Laird at De Montfort University reviewed textiles as infection vectors and found that "S. aureus, E. coli and E. faecium survive on cotton for 21 days" — dry, heavily inoculated, unwashed, under laboratory conditions. The same review reports that "washing with detergent at 30°C eliminates MRSA and most other Gram-positive bacteria," and that 60°C for 10 minutes removes almost all microorganisms. One caveat the review flags itself: those two temperature figures come from UK Department of Health and NHS laundry policy resting on an unpublished study, so they are policy guidance rather than an independently published measurement. Even so, the hazard in that literature is the textile that never gets washed, not the one that does.
The behavioral half comes from Amreen Bashir and Peter Lambert at Aston University, whose culturing of used consumer cosmetics — makeup sponges averaging above 10⁶ CFU per ml, 93% of them never cleaned — we cover in full in Reusable Makeup Pad Hygiene; the variable driving those numbers was maintenance, not reusability.
Four things to check while the round is in your hand
Run this now, on a dry round straight out of the drawer:
- Color. Note it, then set it aside. Uniform darkening across the set is normal pigment loading and carries no hygiene information on its own.
- Texture. A stiff, waxy, or slick patch means oily residue survived the wash — that is a wash-cycle finding, and it is worth acting on.
- Smell. A sour or rancid note on a fully dried round points the same way as a slick patch: residue, not color.
- Structure. Fraying edges, thinning centers, holes, or a permanently matted nap are mechanical end of life. This is the row that retires a round.
Only rows two through four tell you anything. Row one is the one everybody reacts to.
What the wash is actually doing
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's reprocessing guideline is blunt about mechanism: "With manual cleaning, the two essential components are friction and fluidics" — rubbing and flushing, in that order, before any disinfection step. The same guideline notes that a neutral or near-neutral pH detergent "generally provides the best material compatibility profile and good soil removal." That guideline was written for medical device reprocessing, not for a mesh bag in a domestic drum, so treat the mechanism as transferable and the setting as not.
The closest experimental analogue — a 2025 study that laundered heavily contaminated reusable cloth facepieces in ordinary domestic machines, where a normal 40°C cycle cleared the benchmark and the only failing arm was the 30°C non-biological wash with air drying — is unpacked cycle by cycle in Machine-Washing Reusable Cotton Rounds.
LastObject's own care instruction for LastRound is machine wash at up to 60°C in the supplied mesh bag, with a "Rinse or wash after each use" between machine cycles, and two stated prohibitions: fabric softener, which it says "coats the fibres and reduces absorption," and — verbatim from its refill page — "Do not use bleach or harsh solvents." LastObject also states that each round is rated for approximately 250 wash cycles. All of those figures are the brand's own.
Two fixes that make it worse
Reaching for stronger alcohol. The CDC's disinfectant guidance states that cidal activity "drops sharply when diluted below 50% concentration", that the optimum is 60–90% in water, and that "absolute ethyl alcohol, a dehydrating agent, is less bactericidal than mixtures of alcohol and water." Higher proof is not stronger. That guidance is written for hospital equipment, and applying it to a face textile is an extrapolation, not a finding.
Bleaching the stain out. Here the brand instruction exists and is unambiguous — LastObject's refill page prohibits bleach outright, alongside harsh solvents — but the argument holds even without it. Bleaching targets color, the single attribute that carries no contamination information, while leaving the residue that does. You end up with a whiter round and the same wash-cycle problem.
When a round is genuinely finished
The honest answer is that nobody can hand you a number — that is where the reprocessing study linked at the top landed as well. A manufacturer's rating — LastObject's ~250 washes per round included — is a design expectation, not a guarantee, and the retirement decision comes from row four of the inspection above. Structural failure ends a round. Color does not.
When a reusable round is the wrong tool
- Acne-prone skin. The American Academy of Dermatology advises applying cleanser with the fingertips, because "scrubbing with washcloths, sponges, and other tools can irritate your skin." That is a consensus recommendation without quantification, and it does not distinguish reusable from disposable — it is skeptical of tools generally, ours included.
- Anything shared, and anything professional. California's cosmetology regulations, at Article 12 section 981(a), list cotton pads among the items that "come into direct contact with a client and cannot be disinfected" and therefore must be discarded after a single client. In a salon chair a reusable round is not merely suboptimal; it is outside the rules. The same logic applies to a housemate borrowing yours.
- Acetone and nail polish. LastObject describes LastRound as working with water-based products — micellar water, toner, makeup remover, serum, exfoliant — and the same care line that bars bleach also bars harsh solvents. Acetone is exactly that, and a textile you intend to launder hundreds of times is a poor candidate for a solvent job in any case.
- No laundry routine. If rounds will not reliably reach a 40–60°C cycle, the evidence points the other way: the failure mode in every study cited here is the tool that never gets cleaned.
- Travel without a machine, and anything involving broken skin or an active infection — the latter is a question for a clinician, not for a product care guide.

The short version
A stained round that gets washed at a workable temperature, dries fully, and survives a four-point inspection is a stained round. A round that is fraying, stiff, or that quietly never gets washed is a different object — and that is the one the research is actually about.
